The 5000 mile service will be needed soon and I'm thinking about tackling it myself, what all is performed on this 5000 mile service?? What's a ballpark figure on what a dealer charges for this service?

Your owner's manual will show what happens at 5,000. If you don't have one, you can go to the Harley website, enter yourVIN and it will show you. Prices for the dealer to do the service vary, but you should expect to fork out $200 - $300. If I were you and you are at least a little mechanically inclined, spend $50 and get an HD service manual for your bike and do the 5,000 yourself.

Seems like it. In California, dealers seem to get away with charging more that this.
I went to an independent shop with a certified HD tech and it was 285. Would have been more at a CA dealer.

I just paid $285 for my 5k service in Nashville, Tn. Seems pretty standard...

Come on, ya'll. If you shelled out 20K+ for the damn thing, spend the dealer money to get the service right and take advantage of the moment to work the hell out of the warranty for anything that is bugging you. The longer you stay away from the doctor, the less they will take responsibility for your bikes 'health'.
You know what I am saying? Don't give the dealer a reason to blow you off in the critical 2 Yr period.
Perfect records are just that, perfect. Hard to challenge.
