If you want the service done right, and in a timleymannerdo it yourself. The manual will show you how to do it all.

The 5000 mile service will be needed soon and I'm thinking about tackling it myself, what all is performed on this 5000 mile service?? What's a ballpark figure on what a dealer charges for this service?
That (could) jeopardize your warranty among other things .
WRONG, WRONG, WRONG.As long as you have the receipt to prove you did it they cannot deny your warranty claim, I buy my stuff from the dealer so I don't have to save my receipt because they have it in the computer all the $$ I have spent there.

Read this quote again. Now surf around the forums and see all the members questioning dealer procedures. I can't say for sure that the dealer didn't do the 2500 service completely. But I can say fro sure that the 5K was done in accordance with the service manual....I did it myself for around 100.00 and as this is my first Harley, a price tag couldn't be put on the experience and knowledge I got.

What they all said................... In addition to buying the Shop Manual, I went the extra mile and bought torque wrench and a few other misc. items. Given all this, I spent about what the dealer would have charged for the 5k service. But, will be a lot cheaper in the future, know it was done exactly as required, and learned a bunch. There may be a few things with future service intervals I won't tackle myself. But will do all that I want and let the dealer do the rest.

Seems like it. In California, dealers seem to get away with charging more that this.

I went to an independent shop with a certified HD tech and it was 285. Would have been more at a CA dealer.

I just paid $285 for my 5k service in Nashville, Tn. Seems pretty standard...
Not true. My total bill for 5k at my local dealer was $225.

$14 - chrome oil filter
$60 - 6 qts syn3
$2 - gasket
$6 - Spark plugs

Total parts $82.00 + tax
Labor @ $70/hr +/- (2 hrs) $140 +/-
Cleaned and full tank of gas

Dropped it off the night before, it was ready by 10:30 AM the next morning, right after breakfast, ready for a nice ride down the coast. Did not bust my knuckles, nor strained my back, sore knees, etc. Well worth the money.

Ive taken my last 3 Harleys into the dealersfor the 1K service. After That initial service Ive
always done the rest myself, The 5K is a glorified Oil change with a few additional items to check. If you value your bike and would like to take the time to learn and know about it mechanicly get the manual/disc and do it yourself. Just keep all your reciepts. I made a Little folder for mine with digital pics of the reciepts next to the odometer etc so ther will never be any issues of detailed records from the Dealer Etc.
Have fun one day , crank the tunes, and drink a few brews while you do the service!

When I got my 1000 mile service done I specified to the dealer 2X
I said 2X that I wanted the synthetic oil and guess what?

they put in the standard!

Another dealer stripped out my friends oil plug and failed to fix or tell him about it and he found it when he did the next oil change.

So for the hourly rate they charge I will be doing the remainder myself or with the help of a harley gu ru buddy!

I guess I just have to decide if I am goign to run the HD oil or another brand
