Did you talk to your dealer about it and if so what did they have to say?

My visitat thedealer:
First there was "no Problem", "User-Errors", "wrong speed in wrong gear" and several explanations about this "normal sound". Up to now they (MOCO-Engineer) are "under investigation" andtried at first change the gears of the 5th to resolve the whining.

Up to now we (the dealer an I)waiting for the parts to do this.

(sorry for my bad english)

Twoweeks agothe dealerreplaced the whole things inside the transmissionbox (all gears, shafts and bearings) and the primary-chain and the tensioner.
Result after warm-up: The rattling and clatter is not gone, but quieter than before. The whining in 5th gear is like before.
After that they changed the genuine HD transmission-oil to an 75W/140.
Result after warm-up: No change !

I'll keep you informed.

I know this fix from Baker. But it's very expensive in Germany.
The price here in Germany is about 1.200 Euro + 19% VAT, that means near $ 1.500 + 19% VAT !!
Plus the work to install.

The F6F in the US would cost me about $1,800 to $2000 to install (parts and labor).
It would be a shame to have to spend that kind of money on a 7 month old bike with 8,000 mi. that is still covered by warranty for another
2 years and 5 months. It wouls also void the Harley warranty on the transmission.

Moco came out with an Isolated Drive System Sprocket for the touring models that is standard on the 08 models and can be installed on the 07 touring models at their customers expense but they have done nothing for the Softail models. The sprocket will not fit Softails.

I contacted my dealer again and was told they were going to contact a Harley tech rep. I have been waiting 3 days for a call back.

Thanks for the information. How long did they keep your bike for the repair?

Mobil 1 75W-140 helped quiet the whine in 1st, and the clatter in 5th. I only get the clatter under heavy load, so I dont lug it. Much quieter that way.

They kept my biketwo days for repair. And one day for "testing" and finishing.

Next week I would call the dealer and the MOCO-Engeneerwhat they are sheduled to do next.
If they decide "works as designed", now I'm responsible to say what schould be done next.

1. Option: Live with it.
2. F6F Baker or any other non-HD-Solution payed by myself.
3. Take a Testdrive with an 2008 Heritage next spring and decide to buy it or not.
4.Take a Testdrive with an 2008 Roadking and decide to buy or not.
5........ ????

Any hints ?
