I would say neither one … look between the shock bodies instead of the rods … I think it takes something like a 3/4 socket

Here is the transmission drain plug on a 2003 Heritage. It is the OEM plug that takes either a 1/4 hex or 5/8" socket...... It is located between the forward/front end of the shock bodies...

Look at the face of the transmission behind the exhaust pipe under the cover staring at you in the face should be an Allen plug. That's it.

Welcome, the others have newer bikes so their drain is in a different spot.

When you wrote, "88 flstc" I immediately thought 88ci, twin cam, flstc.....
It didn't even occur to me you had a 1988 flstc EVO.... I had a 1989 FLSTC and it was a great bike...
Sure glad Ranger was paying attention....!
