Softail oil dipstick loose - problem fixed
I've got a 2012 FLSTN Softail Deluxe with a loose oil dipstick that rotates freely in the oil filler hole. My attachment pictures show the fix for the problem. I picked up a #62 O-ring from the plumbing dept at my local Ace Hardware store for 59 cents. The o-ring has to be the specific dimensions which are printed on the bag picture that I've included as one of my attachments. If the o-ring is thicker, it will fit on the dipstick but the dipstick won't fit in the oil bag filler hole as it will be too thick. Just remove the dipstick, wipe the rubber boot off well, and slide the o-ring up the rubber boot and into the third groove at the top of the boot. You only need one o-ring. Some folks want to put an extra o-ring in the second groove, but it's over kill. Thoroughly wipe the inside of the oil bag filler hole and insert the dipstick back in. You will have to give a good little push down on the dipstick till you feel it sort of "pop" into place. It'll be nice and snug. The chrome head of the dipstick will still rotate around, but the rubber boot itself will be tight and snug. I put 300+ miles on this fix the past few days without a hint of a leak. Harley wants $35 for a new oil dipstick!
