Pay attention to what oldgeezer stated earlier. "the crankcase oil is not drained from the crankcase but from the oil tank". You should not remove the plug under the bike on the crankcase, the one with the factory sealant. If you wantto do atotal change of the oil in you bike then purchase a scavenger. It works great and allows a complete oil change.

Sounds like you may be okay
"the crankcase oil is not drained from the crankcase but from the oil tank. You should not remove the plug under the bike on the crankcase".
You can ask them about it, just don't start acussing them right from the git go.

If you are looking at the crankcase, hope you understand that the oil is not drained from the crankcase, it's drained from the oil tank. Unless you've ridden quite a bit since the chance you should be able to tell if the crankcase oil is new or not. The rest, you'll just have to trust them or if you are uneasy about it, just change it yourself and move on.

Wow! Thanks for all the fast replies! I am aware that the engine oil is drained from the tank onlyon regular oil changes. I was told by the guy in the service department thaton the initial 1000 mile service the crankcase is to be drainedalso so they can inspect for any metal shavings in the crankcase. Then engine oil changes after that just drain the tank and refill plus change the filter of course. The crankcase holds what 5 or 6 ozs? Not much but still should have been drained on the first service I would think.Reason I assumed they did not change the oil filter was because it had the same couple of water spots on it that i missed when I cleaned the bike before I brought it down there, noticed the spots went I got to the dealer. Guess I should have marked it along with all the plugs....GOSH if I had to do all that just to make sure they did the job right I would have rather them just gave me all the oils and filter and I would have done it myself. I have been a mechanic now for hmmmmm forever, not onmotorcycles. Started off in the auto field, then moved to heavy equipmentalong with a6 yr term in the army as a 63B, now a maintenance tech at a train tank car manufacture. I don't let anyone work on my vehicles other than front end alignments and I hate even letting someone do that. Guess I put too much trust in the harley dealer...just trying tokeep my warranty in good standing. Here is a list of what they told me was done when I picked up the bike:
Drained engine oil tank andcrankcase, checked forshavings, refilledplus new filter.
Changed priamary oil, checked for shavings.
Changed trans oil, checked for shavings
Lubed clutch and throttle cable.
Checked drive belt tension.
Checked all critical fasteners.
Inspected brakes and tires.
I think all they done was drained the engine oil tank then refilled and changed the primary oil. Not reallysure on the transmission. I am going to talk with my salesman about it and see what he has to say. I will more than likey go ahead and change all 3 oils myself then i will know for sureit has been done.
Thanks
James

I can't imagine why they would tell you they were going to drain the crankcase. I've never heard of anyone doing that on a new bike.If there are any shavings they would appear on the magnetic plug on the tank drain. The way I read the owner's manual, the 1000 mile service just says change the fluid in all three holes and change the oil filter.
I don't know mate, but if it were me, I'd let it go. If you aren't sure about the transmission, just change it yourself. It takes a quart of oil which at most costs $10.

Welcome to a Harley dealership. I have personaly found most of them quite distgusting to deal with. It's always some smug a$$ attitude or something with them. I found one 5 hours from where I live (Rice Lake, HD)and was impressed over the phone, so I went there. I ended up buying my last two bikes there because I felt good about the place and thought I was treated fairly. Watch out for #1 when dealing withdealerships and do what you think is right... Over and out Krusty...

I personally don't think the techs do all the items on the service list all the time. I was taking my bike to the dealer for the services when it was still under warranty and had to hassle with a dented air cleaner insert (are you sure it wasn't dented when you brought it in, they said...) and a bent inspection sticker plate. The tech had bent the plate out of the way to change the filter, I guess, but he didn't bother to straighten it up (and it should not have been bent to start with. Who knows what they do or don't do. Now I do all the service work myself and am very satisfied. I know exactly what is done to the bike and how everything looked when I drained the fluids. Here in VA where I took my bike it is almost $500 for a 10K mile service. It takes me a few hours and about $70 and I know it's right.

Not to defend your dealer but, how can you tell the drain plug still has the factory seal on it by looking at it?....You can't. When the oil is changed if a new O ring is used and the sealer re-applied to the threads it would be impossible to tell. If you think you got ripped by the dealernotify Harley, also put the name of the dealer on this forum so someone else dosen't have that same experience......

I've read several posts about shoddy dealer workmanship, bad service, on and on, what gives, but, yet people keep going back. What ever happened to pride in workmaship and good service?? I realize DEMANDING these things will not get you anywhere, but, let's be real, you pay a lot of money for a bike you 've waited a long time to get. Then, as soon as the dealer has it all locked up, your joe WHO? Very sad, but, on any morning there we stand waiting for the dealship to open to buy more parts/
