Might have something to do with the idea of making the bike feel lighter off the stand, and reducing the lean angle to create that. The bike does not lean over very far on the stand.

Cause of the floorboards hiding the stand I have started bike and put it in gear, as soon as I start taking off I hear a quick disengagement of stand folding up quickly. At least HD put in a semi-automatic stand

So far I have not had an issue with mine. I do feel it takes a bit of getting used to after so many years on touring bikes, I have cursed it on more than one occasion. Good luck to you guys that are having trouble.
I have noticed that the stand also kind of digs into the pavement when parking the bike.
Agreed. Works well on my garage floor. But for my driveway I keep a small piece of wood paneling to put under the kickstand. Saves on wear and tear on the stand, and it's easier to set it.
