Sputter and detonations through throttle body
Hi there,
I have a 2007 FLSTF Fat Boy and I recently did full service on my own. Changed every thing: spark plugs, oils, filters (gas filter also), etc...
When I start the bike, it seems like runs ok on idle but then I start to hear pops and sputtering, like if it wants to stall... If I rev the bike a bit, sputters are deeper and some kind of fire/explosions are seen through the throttle body (I removed the air cleaner to check)...
On the road, pops and backfire have increased when decal, but nothing dramatic. I'm worried more about the fire issue and stalling trend of the bike on idle.
Any clue on this please?

Had some negative experiences not long ago as when the bike stalled when stopped after riding for a while, it was hard to start again with clunks and nasty noises and had some smoke coming out of the air filter.
Cleaned the IAC and excess oil and it seamed stalling problems disappeared. But now this explosions and excess pop makes me think that there may be some leak in the intake or something else.
Bike has 33.000 miles aprox.
And thanks for your welcome.

Clunks and kicks backs(what produces the intake smoke) most of the time is caused by worn out batteries that are being nursed too long on maintenance chargers.
The IAC valve should be simpley checked with a key on/off with air cover and filter off to make sure it moves in and out. Maybe a very little spray of throttle body or carb cleaner just on the pointer. Do not spray hard since you can wash crud up thru the o-ring that protects the step motor and if you spray down thru massage way, screw up the temperature sensor, throttle position sensor or map sensor.
Maintenance charge the battery and pull it and get it load tested for it's amp rating. Removeing it will also insure connection is good and tight.

Thanks for your answer.
Forgot to mention that I also changed the battery in my maintenance, so not an issue. Probably that helped to end the clunks and smoke but some stall trend, irregular idle and fire flashes in the intake persist.
I received today a pro carb cleaner and I will clean the intake again following your advice.
I will try to upload a video if symptoms persist.
Thanks!

+1 on the battery issue. I had a similar issue on my Fat Boy and I discovered that the battery cable terminal had cracked and barely made contact. You also might be onto something with the intake issue. Take a little carb spray or propane and spray around the intake to see it the idle smooths out. Keep it away from the air cleaner. If id does you have any vacuum leak somewhere.

Hi there again...
Working too much. Need to ride more... :-)
Reading forums here and there I’ve been able to read error codes and it was 131 and 152... Oxygen sensors seem to not be working properly.
Will disamble and clean as first step and if not, will replace. Previous to all this mess, as I had the bike without battery couple weeks, I hope the ECU hasn’t lost the flash they made on HD when installed aftermarket slip-ons and SE air cleaner.
Will come back to you if I eventually solve the problem guys. Thanks for tou Yelp.
