Default Removing Rear Backrest on 2017 Heritage softail

I want to remove the rear backrest on my Heritage Softail. I’ve removed the saddle bags. If I remove the saddle bag bolts totally are there captured nuts that will keep them from falling through after I remove the bolts. Not much room between the fender and the tire

Welcome for me it is best to loosen both bolts but only remove one at a time. Just keeps the backing piece from falling off.

So the only bolts I remove are the two long 5/8 “ bolts that held on the bags. And when you say Only remove one bolt and loosen the other, is the chromed plate they go through got a slot in in so the plate slides out underneath the bolt ? Thanks

Loosen both bolts on both sides. Remote both the rear bolts and flip the backrest forward. Replace the rear bolts then remove the front bolts.

I am not good at explaining so bare with me. Doing both sides at the same time loosen all 4 bolts, then remove both sides the same bolt and lift the mounting brackets ans replace the bolts. Then remove the second set of bolts and remove the complete backrest and brackets. replace last 2 bolts and tighten all 4. Good Luck

I loosened the four long bolts the went into the bags. I completely removed the the rear two of these bolts but the backrest did not pivot forward so I could put those two bolts back in . Do you have to remove the small torx head bolt at the very rear of the plate for the bracket to pivot ? I hope not cause I could not get it to budge.

Thanks guys for helping me out. I feel stupid I can’t get it done.

Sorry for the lack of info and if you had any idea of the crap I have done wrong ...... The rear torx bolt does need to come out. Just don't take all 3 on 1 side out at once. Probably a good idea to use some blue thread lock when you replace the bolts. Never use red tread lock.
