I did remove the clear plastic piece, but I wound up putting it back on after the first time I used the passenger pillion without it. A few scratches after one ride with somebody on the back. The good thing about the mustang bib is that it is large enough that it covers and hides that whole plastic piece.....

Figures... I just started removing the plastic a short while ago! 
Oh, well, I guess I can clean the fender and put it back on.
My buddy has a little thin black rubber "mat" that goes on the fender under the passenger pillion, but I'm not sure where he got it. Looks like it might be a good solution, in case I'm ever inclined to run solo without the bib, so I guess maybe I'll finish taking the plastic off and get one of those... sorry, just thinking 'aloud'.
