Default Speedometer not reading correctly

06' FXSTB-I Night Train

Here's the issue. I turn the bike on without starting it by the gas tank switch and the speedometer jumps to 10Mph. If I turn the switch to accessories, it resets back to zero, but jumps to 10Mph when I switch it to the start position again (sometimes it stays at zero until start it and move).

After I start it, put it into gear and move the speedometer climbs very quickly up to the 50 Mph range and drops to 45 Mph and stays there when I stop. When I drive it down the highway, it pegs the speedometer and then drops to around 50-55 Mph when I come to a complete stop. If I turn the bike off and turn the gas tank switch to accessories, it reset the speedometer to zero, but back to 10Mph (without moving and in neutral) when I turn it to the run position again.

Any ideas before I go waste $70 on a speed sensor?

Check if the connectors are all well set, a loose connection may cause strange readings

You may just need to remove it and clean it, they do get nasty.

Check your battery terminals. I had a bike do the exact same thing and one of the battery terminal bolts were loose.

I'll check for loose connections, clean the speed sensor and get back to let you know if it solved the issue. I'm leaning on poor continuity seeing its a problem that shows symptoms occurring before bike is even fired up.

Default Didn't work.

Checked and Cleaned Speed senor connection, battery connections, ignition/accessories switch and speedometer connector. Problem still exists.

Facebook Post

this is a link to a video of what the speedometer is doing when I turn it on.

It doesn't show in the video, but once in a while the needle will spin up and sit at the odometer and stay there. When this happens I can switch it to accessories and it'll drop back to 0'ish.

I haven't noticed this, but think mileage is considerably off. My estimate by maps is under 400 miles, yet it's showing over 500.

Speed sensor could be bad , you could try unhooking your battery for 10min to reboot your ECM as it sends the signal to your speedo.

See what happens if you leave the speed sensor unplugged.
