No but from the instructions they fit straight on facing oil cooler.

It even mentions plastic plugs in some models on instructions. Well if there are plastic plugs in the frame of the 18 FatBoy they are hidden well. I looked with a light all up and down the frame and damn if I can see a plastic plug. If anyone knows where these “holes” are located I will buy you a big foamy drink of your choice for that info!

Well I went back and looked at instructions on HD web site. What was posted on another site was instructions for totally different guards for a totally different bike. If you look at instructions they simply fit to the side at bottom of frame and center section sits just above oil cooler. Looks pretty easy to do. Biggest job is relocating clutch cable from side of frame so bar will fit.

Something that should convince you is to price out the replacement part for the primary cover and other parts that will scratch or get damaged should the bike drop on you.

My bike has dropped twice on me, and I have been riding since the early 80's. Once in a slow turn in a parking lot when I hit an oil spot and another time when the kick stand (jiffy) moved on me and down it went. My bike would have sustained damage had I not had my engine guard.

Another plus is that on long rides, it gives you a place to stretch your legs.
