i have 2797 lmt in car.. mounted below the windscreen picture.
restricted to cig lighter for power and live traffic.
will not accept a different cable atall..error mess.

i bought usb usb mini cable from amazon built for this purpose.
it has the built in 1.7k resistor ..
plugged into usb 2A port.
unit needs 1A minimum.
power only, no error message..
also works from battery pack
comes in diff lenghts ..works great, like 7$ idr
so, for sure itll work from btender adapter..use extension usb if you have to.

short answer:: they sell specific cables that work great..
this is one place http://www.gpscity.com/3br-powerspor...able-12-inches

Default Cable does NOT work

Scratch that, the cable I bought from GPS City does not work. I went for a long ride last Saturday and it did not keep my GPS charged on the bike. I have contacted GPS City to see if I bought the wrong cable or perhaps I have a bad cable. I will post again when I have more info.

Looks like my options are the dreaded cigarette adapter which I hate or buy a different GPS for the bike.

OR take the cigarette lighter adapter...cut off the adapter part and replace it with the battery tender plug

From what you describe, your GPS doesn't charge over USB. USB is really simple - there are only 4 wires. There aren't different cables. Since you said it won't charge when plugged into a wall charger, it seems you have your answer.

If your GPS came with a wall-wart charger with its own connection, it is almost certain that it won't charge over USB. If it came with a cigarette adapter that uses the same connection (not USB), that adds to the evidence that it requires a proprietary charger.

What is the voltage/amp rating of the cigarette plug charger that came with your GPS?

That's because your phone is designed to charge over USB.

Or just cut the plug off and put ring terminals on the cord in its place to hard wire it to the battery. Allowing the tender plug to remain unoccupied for other uses.

The adapter likely contains the transformer to adapt the voltage and current to match the device's requirements. It's not safe to eliminate it unless you first confirm the device accepts 12v as the charging voltage.
