Yep... I ride mine a lot on shorter local rides without, but if I'm putting on any major miles on the freeway/highway I'm going to have my shield on.
We did 250 miles in the Sequoia National Forest a couple of weekends ago, and I left the shield at home. Since it was mostly on two-lane roads, it was just fine, although we rode about 60 miles there and back on freeway and I did miss it at that time.

I like the look without as well, so I bought the shortest HD detachable. Once I tried it on the highway, like everyone else says, it sure makes the ride more enjoyable and easier on you.
I put it on myself and it was a breeze. Only have to remove and replace 4 bolts (1 at a time) with loctite.

Don't like'em, I haven't given in to the pressure from my buddies yet. I've rode 2000 miles in a long weekend without one. A rider backrest is more beneficial for overall comfort on long rides IMO. However, with the quick detach options you can have it both ways. I'm still considering getting one. Maybe a low profile smoked one would be cool on my scoot.
