Question California EPA Exhaust Q..

The CA EPA bikes have a baffling system within the exhaust, does anyone know if it is in the mufflers or the down pipes? I want to change the exhaust but if it is in the mufflers slip-ons will work, if it's in the pipes that connects to the heads a full system will be needed???

It's in the muffler, they have a giant catalytic converter built into them. Slip ons will work just fine.

Just to clarify......

The CA exhaust is the same as all other 50 states exhaust.

EPA is national (all 50 states) organization.... CARB (California Air Resources Board) is for CA only....

The catalytic converter is a national, EPA requirement...... it has been illegal to "tamper" with an EPA approved exhaust since 1983...

My newest bike is a 2012 Limited, and then, the only additional CARB requirement, other than the CARB compliant label, was the charcoal air canister that filters the vent from the gas tank.

Starting in 2013 all approved mufflers need to have the "EPA approved" stamp on them.

CA passed a law (SB435), allowing Law Enforcement to cite any bike manufactured after January 1, 2013, with a non-OEM or EPA stamped exhaust. It allowed for enforcement of EPA requirements without the LEO needing any special tools/training.... the fact that your exhaust doesn't have the required EPA stamp is a violation in itself..... Most violations, prior to the required EPA stamp, are usually local laws based on sound output... needing special equipment and training.

FWIW......
