88"-95"/98" motor upgrade
#12
I am having someone do my heads and jugs. I will be sending the pistons and they will actually match them, which the kits are not. They are just known parts to work together.
The cost for me to do this is actually ending up cheaper...I can also choose what I want in my bike versus someone else dictating that.
Do your homework...that is part of what it is about...
I will be doing 98 build with cams and updated cam plate.
As soon as riding season is over, they are being shipped out....

Opinions? I'm about to upgrade the ol 88" ( 06' fxst, carb) to either a 95" or 98", heads, jugs, pistons etc etc. I already have my cams (211 screamin eagle) push rods and the fueling hp kits with the cam plate and oil pump with all necessary gaskets. Now my question is which kit and why? Zippers, head quarters, S&S etc etc. I am running an S&S carb, 2-1 pipe I made and an open filter air cleaner. Prices are about the same but I'm more so interested in reliability, power/performance and experience with the company. And go!
Very popular shops like Hillside Cycle or Fuelmoto, match components to get a good performing package... They need to put their reputations on the line for performance and reliability.
I would call one of them, or another shop with a good reputation if one is closer to you, and get their input. See what they think they would match to your selected cams, or if they would even recommend those cams in your application.
Just throwing a mismatch of parts together can lead to tuning and other performance/reliability problems. Talk with someone who matches these parts for a living to get their input.....
Just my 2 cents.....
FWIW... My 88 was FI, but I went with the the HD big bore kit within a year of buying my '03 Heritage. It had SE 203 cams (not as radical as the SE211 cams) and with the HD Stage II download tune, it was much better than stock... I've since added a custom tune from DynoJet with my PowerVision tuner and it's even better!!
