Looking cool is subjective. Throwing off the trail/rake and completely changing the way they bike handles from stock, that could be a negative or a positive.
Your son needs to change his riding style or buy a motorcycle that fits the way he rides. Anything less and it's an accident waiting to happen.

Honestly on doubt a 1/4" would be enough. I got to the point where I was scraping the bottom of the back mount. I have V&H exhaust and the mount wouldn't make it 1/4" before it hit the pipes. Moving them forward may help a little. Like other said you have to adjust your riding style, the key for me was cornering late and keeping the bike upright for as long as possible.
