in my younger days when i had full custom bikes...i had a ultima 127 with baker 6 spd that i put 14k miles on with no problems at all..it did run alittle hot in warm weather tho...and i also had a patrick racing 140 that was 175 hp that i put 7k troublefree miles on that was a scary beast to say the least...im sure those 120r motors are pretty good on reliability...wouldnt hesitate on that one or the s&s 124

Nicely done -

what sort of cost difference are you seeing with a 107 vs the 124 you built? how does that stack up bang for buck wise?
Depends on how far into it you want to go. The 107 I posted got a new S&S crankshaft, When I got the bike it was a stage I 103". When I tore it down and did the pre-build inspection I found his crank runout was .008". At that point the customer made the decision to have me R&R the bottom end with a new S&S crank. I do a lot of 107" builds (4 in here right now) and I've done 4 S&S 124"s since January. The difference in cost between the 2 posted was between $1,200 and $1,500. But that's doing the 107" right and addressing the stock bottom end.

^ Sounds good, I mainly asked in order to pull out a bit more info for the OP. Glad to have another knowledgeable engine builder here in the forum.

I did NOT dislike the words spoken about the 120R engine. I said the majority of the posts were not positive and one poster suggested the actual forum for which the engine would be installed which is the softail forum. His suggestion made sense to me.

Next in line was whom I was answering. Your posts (LA DOG) were much appreciated. I think the S&S 124 is right for my bike and will indeed keep all informed. Thanks once again.

^^ That's pretty exciting- you get that sucker set up properly, upgrade your rear belt pulleys and hang on for dear life - anyway looking forward to the "124 build thread"

Here's a 107" I did the final tune on today, the bike is a 2007 Nighttrain. 3.973" CP pistons, SE heads from the stage IV kit, SE 259E cams, SE 58mm TB, Hooker true duals (look like V&H big radius). This bike started out with the 103 stage IV kit but he had a screw come out of the butterfly in the SE 58mm TB and get sucked up in the heads, it ruined a head, SE warrantied the head and I bored the cylinder and used CP pistons. His clutch is slipping also.

^^ very nice- bet he'd have closer to 126tq with a smaller TB- too much loss of intake velocity on a 107 with 58mm and early intake close cams. Ended up good thing it was not stuck on a 103..

nice smooth chart- you know how to work with the tough combos.

Yes, this was his third build on that bike. The first was the 103 stage IV kit. He got some miles on it and the crank scissored. He rebuilt with another stage IV kit and put in a S&S crank then had the throttle body screw get sucked up in the heads. (that was during the break in on build 2, so we re-built it with the 107" pistons. Hopefully this one will stay together for him, the bike has a lot of sentimental value to him. It's a tribute bike he built in momory of his son who was killed in Afghanastan.
