The big difference is... Night Trains are the coolest Harleys!

...And why the heck WOULD one chrome a Train?

The softail standard has the silver motor, I chose the night train for the black motor.
I wanted a Softail Standard but Ipreferred the black motor so I got a Night train.

To answer the original question, the Standard and the Night Trains are exactly the same bikes as far as motor, tranny & frame.

All the differences are cosmetic.

The Trains havedrag barswith straightrisers rather than stock Softail bars.
Trains have black Enginecovers while the Standards are either chrome or polished.
Trains have black fender struts / Standards have chrome struts.
The stock seatsaredifferent which changes the height of the bike by about 1 inch.
The upper & lower belt guards on a Train are black plastic, the Standards have a plastic lower and a chrome upper.
Of course the black vs the gray motor.
The black primary cover vs the gray primary cover.
Chrome mirrors on the Standard and black mirrors on the Train.
The Standard has a chrome tank console & the Train's come with black consoles.
Trains have a black solid rear wheel and the Standards rear wheels are solid polished aluminum.
Trains have a wrinkle black oil tank and the Standards have a gloss black tank.

Oh and the trains are usually a couple hundred dollars more in price over the Standards.

Before the Custom, the Night Train was the only black based engine offered by Harley in an FX Softail, well except the Deuce that is.
So, the rest of us were forced to buy a Night Train to get the black engine, and we had to go from there.
Some people see beauty in the all black look, and some don't. Personally, I love the all black engine & oil tank, but not the rest of the bike in all black.
So for me,the Trainwas still the better deal than a Custom for where I wanted to go with the bike. It was easier than swapping out the chrome engine parts for black.

The entire Softailline shares the exact same frame. Same bike with different bars/tanks/fenders/tires added to make the change. Ride one and you've ridden them all.

I have two more...

The Nightrain was the first model to come out with the 200 rear tire.

When someone asks you what kind of bike you ride, you get to say "Nightrain" instead of "Softail Standard".

'06 Standards came out w/the 200 tire...same time as the NT's...I boughtmy Standard knowing I'd be changing some of the powdercoat out for chrome (that and I got it for $1,000 less than a NT)...with a NT you do get drag barsstock and the front signals are already located on the forks...that's good stuff right out of the box. Basically I passed ona NT only because I wasn't all that wild aboutthe 95%blacked outlook...and as far as the NT bieng the "coolest" Harley...eye of the beholder brother!

The biggest difference...not as many people have a Standard.

[sm=icon_rofl.gif]D'oh! That's right, I said it.
Actually, it's the other way around. More Standards than Night Trains.

Maybe because the wimminfolk complain too much about cleaning the wrinkle finish?
I do all the cleaning on my Train myself just to maintain the peace (and because I don't want anyone else fooling with it).
