Default '07 consuming oil?

A frined of mine said that his '07 softail custom has used 1/2 quart of oil in 500 miles. I asked him how many miles were on it and he said 1500 he had the 1k service done and the dealership put SYN3 in all 3 holes and he said he checked the level and that it was full but after he checked it at the 1500 mile mark he noticed that it was down a 1/2 quart. Seems as though that would be excessive. No oil from the breather noted, plugs are good, bike does not smoke. One more thing is he had SE pipes and a/c installed after the 1k service and the bike was dyno'ed within those 500 miles (could that be it?) what gives? I am begining to wonder if the dealer did not top the oil off but he said he checked it?

Any expert opinions or past experiences as to what is going on.

I don't have an answer for you but I'm going to check my levels when I get home tonight.

He probably put synthetic in the motor before the motor was properly broken in. If the piston rings are not properly seated to the cylinder walls, it will suck oil like gas. He may also have a motor with a bad valve guide seal. I would take it out and romp on it really good, load the motor up. Pull a mountain riding two-up, and hope that he can get the rings to seat with synthetic in the motor.

Don't assume the dealer put the correct amount of oil in. Have him do another 500 mile while keeping an eye on the oil level before you start fixing crap. Make sure he checks the oil after the bike is warmed up everytime to get an accurate reading and to make sure wet sumping isn't getting figured in.

1/2 quart is about what the filter holds. I'm thinking that maybe the dealer wrench forgot to run the bike and top it off after the service.

Update:

Went over and checked it out and found thecold level to be in the half way mark! I told him we are going for a ride, follow me and keep up!!! When we got back I told him to let it idle for a minute or two upright and then shut it off.

Well what do you know the oil level is Full on the sidestand! He told me he did that, but I don't think he warmed it up enough!

Problem solved thanks for all that helped!
