Default Oil Change Theory

So since its recommended to check the oil level within 5 minutes of running the bike, it stands to reason that shortly after shutdown the oil level in the tank is higher. Which would also imply that after letting it sit for a while, some oil seeps back down into the crankcase lowering the level in the tank. When you guys drain the tank for an oil change, do you follow this same logic by letting it run for a while and draining fairly quickly after shutdown to get as much as possible out of the tank drain? ThnKs guys.

I change the oil with the bike warmed up. Remove the drain plug, get the bike straight up and let it drain. By the time you have a beer or soda, get the new filter on, and wipe your hands your ready to reinstall the plug and refill with your favorite oil.

My owners manual states to check the oil at "normal operating temperature". That would be longer than 5 minutes after starting the bike.

When changing the oil, I start the bike and let it run for 10 minutes. I turn it off and let it sit for a few minutes and then drain the oil.

If after draining, you tip the bike as far to the right as you dare, you'll get a lot more oil out.

The downward sloping leg of the oil tank on the left side of the battery traps a lot of oil. No easy way to get it all out, but tilting the bike will get a lot more of it out than if the bike remains level.

Default Scavenge Oil change

A complete oil change in a dry sump engine takes a bit of extra work, but I think it is fun, and I get 30oz of dirty oil out of my engine AFTER draining the oil from the plug.

I think my oil LOOKS cleaner on the dip stick for many more miles using this method, but for some reason this total oil change (scavenge method) remains controversial. If done correctly there is no way you could harm the engine. If you watch the vid, it is OBVIOUS when clean oil enters the clear exit hose, and it is time to stop the engine.
