The idea behind flush mounts being something "less conspicuous", what could be more cool than flush mount black on black ?
That said, if you're looking for other suggestions, Kuryakyn make these:
As you can see they are neither flush nor proud and they are cheaper than the flush mounts. They do require a key, however, but spares can be purchased for 5 bux.

The flush caps look nice, but there are some reported cases of them failing to open (and it happened to me once when I pulled into a gas station on empty.. was pretty much screwed).
The adhesive holding the trim rings will probably fail eventually too. Not a big deal to stick it back down with new adhesive, if you catch it before you lose the trim ring on the road somewhere.
The other problem is that the LED's on the matching flush-mount fuel level gauge tend to fail.
If I had it to do over, I'd stick with the stock gas cap.
