RE: r and r of handgrips
I asked the guy in the dealer the same thing when I got a new set of grips.
His answer was, stock ones can be tough, but aftermarket ones are often glued on and itmight take a pipe wrench to get them off.
When I asked him what I shoulduse on my new grips he said, "crazy glue", go figure.

When I replaced my grips, I didn't use any glue on the left one. It fit into a notch in the clutch lever housing. The stock one wasn't glued either. I split the housing and the grip slipped right off no problem.
Cheers!

Citoriplus is right...stock grips will have a few 'lines' of glue laid down before sliding the grip on at the factory. Aftermarket grips are usually put on with a bunch more adhesive than they actually need!
If you aren't worried about keeping the removed grips, figure a way to score a line down the length of the grip so you can 'peel' it open and off. If not that...you could possibly get some sort of small screwdriver under it and work it loose. I personally think that the grips will end up trashed anyway!
Good luck!

Recently changed out my buddies bars on his RKC and he had aftermarket Kury ISO grips that were glued on. I just grabbed ahold of the left one with both hands and twisted real hard and broke it loose. I knew it wasnt held by the housing as we had installed the grips at an earlier time with the Krazy Glue type glue that came with them.

Glad it didn't fight you.
Bikes newer than 99 (I think) have the grips 'attached' or held on with the switch housing. But all the replacement grips are made to fit "all" years and earlier ones were routinely glued on as well as many replacement grips, like the flame ones you took off.
