Default How to check oil level?

Dear friends
The question sounds silly but quite sure some of us still confuse how to do it right.
When we check oil level, do we need to turn/push the dipstick all the way down or just let the dipstick rest on top of the thread of filler hole?
Any advice will highly appreciated and sorry for my 'bad' English.

Your English is fine. You may get some more specific help if you put in the year and model of your bike in with your question. Generally, I always push the dipstick all the way in to check the oil.

1. Warm up engine.
2. shut engine off
3. have bike parked on jiffy/kick stand on level ground
4. Remove filler cap/ dip stick and wipe clean
5. reinsert filler cap/ dip stick all the way.
6. Remove filler cap/ dip stick again and check oil level.
7. If low add oil to full mark

lmbo...warm the engine up, shut down. Now while still straddling the scoot and the scoot level, pull the dipstick, wipe it off on your pants leg and stick it back in. Now pull it again and see where your mark is. A tad low doesn't mean freak out and run home to level it off.

Exactly how I do it except for point 7 - I always run at the 75% oil level mark, because my scoot is prone to spitting a little oil from the top end breathers into the air filter with the level at the full mark.

Hi friends
Thanks a lot for the advices.
My bike is HD Rocker FXCW year 2009.
I understand all the process (engine warm,on jiggy stand, etc). The only thing I still confuse is to turn/push the dipstick all the way down or just let the dipstick rest on top of the tread of the filler hole.

Nope, everything above is correct except it needs to be on the "kick" stand. ( Jiffy Stand is a HD term I just can't use)

Nope, no one ever told me that. I would have remembered explaining why the marks on the dip stick were designed to read the oil level when the oil tank is canted rather than level.

You ever READ THE SERVICE MANUAL?

2009 SOFTAIL SERVICE MANUAL 99482-09

Page 1-15 CHECKING OIL LEVEL

Oil level cannot be accurately measured on a cold engine.
For pre-ride inspection, with motorcycle leaning on jiffy
stand on level ground, oil should register on dipstick
between arrows when engine is cold. Do not add oil to
to bring the level to the FULL mark on a COLD engine.
(00185)

Ride motorcycle until engine is warmed up to operating temper-
ture, then do the following.

1. Idle motorcycle on jiffy stand for 1-2 minutes'

2. Shut motorcycle off and leave motorcycle resting on jiffy
stand.

3. See Figure 1-2 Check oil level on dipstick. if necessary,
add oil until oil registers at upper groove on dipstick. Do not
overfill oil tank.

How much difference does it make if the tank is level vs canted on the kick stand? I don't know but the service manual thought it was important enough to list it several times and print it in bold type. Do I do everything by the manual? Na, if previous knowledge or experience dictates otherwise I do what works. In this case I can't think of a reason to deviate from the manual but then I mostly ride, and wrench on baggers,,,,

The OP was asking a question about the PROPER method to check his oil. Hence my comment, wasn't trying to bust your chops.

Neither of our posts actually answered his question as to threaded in or not

Push the dipstick all the way in to check oil level with the motorcycle the side stand. Your English is better than many of the folks around here that live in an English speaking country. Good luck and good rides.

It's even on the dipstick to check the oil level with it sitting on the side stand. (I also have a hard time saying "jiffy stand". It makes me think of a kid on the sidewalk running a peanut butter sale.)
