After going through the trouble of swapping to the taller 2012 bars from my stock 2011.
I still was not happy with them and next stepped up to the current LA Choppers 14" apes.
I find them much more comfortable on longer rides. Absolutely no regrets.

Here's a couple decent install write-ups:

I did my own. Hardest part was threading the damn wires thru. Other than that, it's pretty much a cakewalk. Good luck, brotha!

How tall are you? (5'11" here) I'm in the same boat. Changed bars (from fatboy to FATBOY lo). Terrible pain across shoulders. Everything I read say apes are the way to go. I just don't want my arms to be higher than my shoulders. I was thinkin 12" but now after seeing the 14" I'm not so sure. I also don't want to sacrifice handling. Do the taller bars do this?

Switched out the stock bars for Wild 1s chubby apes 12.5 inch. Love them. More comfortable, looks better.

I almost went 16 inches, but ultimately decided too-tall apes detracted from the Lo look, just my two cents

Rat, I'm 5'-9" and have 14" apes on my 94 Heritage. They are right at shoulder height. I'm fixing to put 14's on my Lo. I wouldn't worry about them being over your shoulders. Oh, and handling....You'll get used to high bars in 10 minutes.

I went from stock 2010 bars to the Street Slammers.. which were nice, but caused a pinch in my shoulders on longer rides. Came across a nice fellow on the forum here who wanted to trade bars with me, so I took his 14" LA Choppers apes off his hands, and what a world of difference. Very nice on long rides.. a bit squirrley if you have to do a slow U-turn though.

14", for me, are just above my shoulders (don't tell the NJ Troopers that), and i'm 5'10".

Go with the 14's. I'm 5' 7+" and have 16's and no problems now that I got it figured out where I want them front to back. You won't regret it. And down the road if you want them higher just get different risers.

i maybe stepping out of the box here but with that fatboy fat front end i think a set of 1.5 inch thick bars would look pretty good
