I am not very mechanically savvy, and reading this thread makes me think I might need a dyno tune for my bike. A couple of people have said it looks like I have stage I on my bike. When I decelerate at high rpm's, such as down shifting from coming off the highway I get a couple of "pops". Is that not normal and if so can it be corrected? Is a dyno test expensive?

There is NEVER a bad time to put a bike on a Dyno and one reason they might not do it is because it will put it outside the parameters of a stock tune which is EPA friendly. Tuning it, Dyno, is the only way to go.

Personally, I wouldn't spend the money on a tune for a stage 1. Not worth the cost in my opinion for what you will get compared to other canned maps available. Although, I also wouldn't use a Harley tuner either.

That's pretty much how I get it. HD dealership = EPA parameters, period, no matter which they do, in which case you still probably won't get rid of that lean machine, just won't be as lean. That's why I love my FP3, gets me 90-95% there and that's fine for me. '14 Fatboy Lo.

I also don't think a dyno is worth it with just a stage one. If you are not going pass a stage 1 get the fp3. If you think you might do cams or more at a later date then get the power vision. If money is no problem then get a thunder max....

Thanks for all of your replies, I really appreciate the feedback. To clarify, the maap they would use to download on my bike would be one the service department has put together from previous customers with similar setups to mine. After reading the responses, I am leaning towards letting them use my SEPST and download one of their maps and see how that goes. I won't be able to take it in till the first week in February so I still have a bit to solidify my decision. Again, thanks for your input, I greatly appreciate all you have to share.

Sounds like a good plan.....

I know a couple tuners that work at Harley shops who are extremely capable.
I've also heard about a few tuners at Harley shops who probably shouldn't be washing bikes, let alone tuning them.

If your shop's service department/ tuner is squared away, you'll be satisfied with your choice....

Enjoy!

Decel popping is normal with many aftermarket pipes. It can be tuned out by throwing the fuel/air mix way off (far off enough that it won't ignite in the pipes), but the popping doesn't hurt anything.
