I haven't owned a RK, however, I just put 750 miles on my FLSTC in a day, the only complaint I have is that there wasn't enough daylight. I know it's not a touring bike, but I'm pretty sure you'll be happy with which ever one you choose. For me it was the price. I found my FLSTC for a steal compared to a RK in my area at the time.

Road Kings do better when you find yourself detoured onto 25 miles of dirt/gravel washboard with switchbacks. Where I live, that's the deciding factor. If you don't anticipate that happening, go with what you look best on.

I already have a Heritage, but after riding a Road King for 2 days, I noticed a difference in the ride that I liked. However, I do like the sportiness of the classic. I'll probably keep it.

If you're going for a newer bike, get the Road King. Otherwise, get an EVO Road King.
Edit: You should maybe consider an FXR, too.

I have an 08 Heritage Classic. Previous bike was an 08 Triumph Rocket III Touring (3 cyl.140 ci engine). The R3 is a very serious long distance highway burner with sport bike power (very addicting). Clearly a great touring bike. My son and I took our HD's to AMA Vintage days in Ohio this past July. We live in MA. It was a 700 mile ride one way. My son rides a RK. He kept asking if I would like to try his RK. I kept telling him I was OK with the Heritage. They are two totally different bikes, both with pros and cons. I believe either will do the job (long distance or otherwise), it just boils down to what you, the rider is most comfortable with. I am 67 and have been riding all of my life. I needed something physically smaller than my R3. I have always like the classic look of the Heritage. Now I own one. After having it dyno tuned (and a few other smaller personal adjustments), I cannot be any happier with the bike. Not as fast as the R3, but I am at the age where I need to slow down anyway. It is all about personal preference. My son loves his RK and I agree, it is a nice bike. I however, prefer my Heritage. Go with what you feel most comfortable on and with.. Either bike is a good choice.
