Alert - Front brake master cylinder leakage on Breakout and ?
#11
If you over tighten the screws for the cap it will distort the seal and cause them to leak. The spec is only 10 inch pounds. My method is to use the shaft of a screw driver to run the screws in till they bottom out and then go another 1/4 turn. So far I have had no leaks.
I have only ever seen a mechanic use a torque wrench on a master cylinder lid bolt ONCE - that was when the owner at Shamrock Cycles inspected my rear master cylinder for fluid level when I was experiencing rear brake drag due to improper installation of the brake pad spring plate by an HD dealership mechanic. I think most mechanics figure they have sufficient "feel". Unfortunately, some don't have that feel!
OR, it COULD be a bad batch of seals from HD, or a bad batch of lids.
I don't think we really know for sure.

That COULD potentially be the cause of the leaks.

Mine was leaking, too, at 900 miles. Didn't require any new parts to fix and I did it myself.
Held bike upright. Removed cap and seal. Wiped seal completely dry, reinstalled seal, reinstalled cap, and alternately tightened screws without over tightening. Not a drop in the last several thousand miles.
Most of the time the leaks on master cylinder seals are due to improper installation; the seal was installed wet with fluid on the edges. Once these seals are wet with fluid on the sealing surface itself they will leak.

I TOTALLY agree here I had same problem and did same, took apart cleaned and did same tightening back up no leaks sense. I will also say I noticed a vent in the seal also. Dont over tighten or you will crush the vent along with the seal.
