For those of you who looked at my post of point adjustment problems I finally got to the bottom of it. After several hours of trying to static timing it and getting no where I finally took the flyweights to find out what was wrong and found that the little roll pin that goes into the notch on the end of the shaft had sheared off. Got new advance weights and put them in but the bike would still not fire. I knew that I had an after market ignition plate because it had metric screws. I thought maybe that an after market plate mixed with Harley points might be the problem. Found a used OEM plate on eBay and put my points and condenser on it. The points now worked like they were supposed to do. Thirty minutes later the bike started and now runs fine. Mystery solved. Sometimes aftermarket plates and Harley points don't mix.

Question is...How the hell ya indexed the advance unit, without the Pin????

 

That's what the problem was. I could advance the flyweights but the bolt was still tight enough to keep it from moving a whole lot. I moved just a little and I kept running into the light coming on at the wrong time and screwing up the proper time frame of when the light was supposed to be coming on I fought with it for a couple or hours because the light was coming on at a different time. The bolt was just tight enough that the weights went around but slipped a little each time.

 

Ya never looked inside when stabbing the Advance unit??
I have always either indexed visually, or sometimes stab and twist till the unit Seats!!!

 

I was able to twist the little cam and the weights moved. Everything seemed ok. I guess I just twisted them hard enough to move but not enough to twist them under the tension of the bolt that holds them in. When I took the weight assembly off it felt ok. I wonder if the pin sheared but the piece stayed in the groove and kept it from moving for a while. It just didn't feel like a sheared pin.

I had not yet replaced these yet and they were a little old. I replaced them with some ones that were made in the US from Lowbrow customs.

 

Points??? or Advance Unit??

 

Both. The advance unit had pivot holes that were a little wallered out. The points had a little too much side to side play
