Hello, I'm sure this has been answered at some point. If it is I can't find it.
So, I go out to my by bike recently It won't start. It carbureted so I see it is getting fuel. I start chasing from the plug behind the coil, then the coil, then the ends of the spark plug wires on DC volts. All have 12v with the ignition on. Cranks but won't start. I can't explain the sound it makes when it's cranking. It's like a sick sort of weak crank. It's still as far as usual but you can tell it isnt going start. I then go to the parts store to get plugs to test the plug on the engine. It didn't work at first. Then it randomly did. Started the bike, killed it, started it, rode it, put in garage, killed it, started it. I thought it was just a some weird spark plug issue. Came out the next day. Same problem I started with and no spark. Crankshaft position sensor? Is there a way to test the sensor. I know just enough to be dangerous with a multimeter.

 

You should load test the battery, if nothing else but to rule it out as an issue.

 

Good on you for having a multimeter, now put it away, you can't check for spark with meter. While you have your cranks/no start problem remove the sparkplugs, place them into sparkplug wires, then ground the body of the sparkplug against the cylinder head, cylinder, or any nearby good ground. While cranking the the engine over you should see a bluish, possibly yellowish spark jumping across the gap of the sparkplug. By the way be careful where you have your fingers near the plug or you will discover another sure fire method of checking for spark.

 

Cpk produces AC to ignition. I think needs coupe volts. But will read high with plugs out. Could also be bad ignition module.

Put a jump pack or charger on it, that may rule out battery.

My 2001 is on third coil and 3 rd ignition and second cpk at 90k.

Make sure ignition connectors are tight

 

Use an extra plug. The ecm needs to "see" compression to fire.

 

Carbed bikes will spark without the plugs in.. So which is it? FXDL or FXDLI?

FWIW sounds like a weak battery. If the battery voltage drops below about 9V while cranking you won't get a spark on either IIRC. Might get one on carbed bike when the cranking stops..
