Welcome from Sydney Australia.
Best to raise a post in the Vrod section https://www.hdforums.com/forum/vrsc-models-8/ and see what they think.
If I remember correctly, the best way to remove the tank is to remove the rear tire and then swing arm.and it is easy from there.

Welcome to the HDFORUM.
I hope you continue to enjoy your ride here, as much as you enjoy your bike.
Only as a suggestion, by me as a USER just like you, create a signature line similar to my one line on my bike information.
The year, model, and all the letters Harley assigned to the bike. It will appear at the bottom of your post.
Doing this will be helpful if you ask a question. All Harleys aren't the same with many changes and variations over the years.
Of course, you can add it to any thread with a question.
You can also add any other details you choose and a favorite picture to the signature lines.
If you like, you can also add another favorite picture for an Avatar you see at the top left of all your posts as a postage stamp.
Quickly...
Sure your tank has a sock on inlet. Doubt a spring would ever cause an issue. Think the tank is plastic.
I would put a telescope fish magnet to the bottom on a tank at near empty. Shake the bike good. If it's moving around, the magnet may catch it.
