Default Oil dripping from bottom of bike (FXR)

Hello! I'm rather new to this forum. My bf and I just fixed his 1988 Dyna FXLR so that I can learn to ride befor I get my license.

We changed the oil, etc....it wouldn't start after putting it back together. It's been about a month since we changed the oil.

Tonight we figured out what was causing it to not start and got it started which is GREAT but after shutting it off very quickly after starting it, there was oil dripping from the under side of it. After it sat, it stopped dripping but it got very hot very quickly.

What could be causing this? My boyfriend is afraid to start it again as he doesn't want to ruin it. We checked the oil reservoir and it was full.

It seems it's not getting oil to the engine compartment and his question is how does the oil circulate through the engine?

We really want to figure out so I can get in the it and ride.

This is my bike for reference

@Nikiel1010 I have moved this thread from the Welcome section to the Dyna section as you will get better responses to your question in this section.

A simple oil leak won’t ruin anything, it’s just messy. As long as it’s just drips you’re fine to start the bike.
Clean the oil off the bottom of the bike, start it and let it run and leak a little. Then you’ll know what’s leaking and what has to be done next to fix it.
Assuming there was no leak before you changed oil I’d say you cross threaded the oil plug.
Or it could be as simple as old oil got spilled while changing it and it’s just dripping off.

What did you guys do to bike ? Did you take anything apart? Brake clean all over, then start bike to see where it's coming from.

As said leaks are typically just messy. Unless you had something major apart, I wouldn't worry.

When we first started the bike months ago after getting it out of storage, it did the same thing. We drained all of the oil, put a new oil filter on, changed the plugs, etc....
When we started it last night, it only ran for a few minutes before he shut it off. I noticed when he started it, that's when the oil "sprayed" out from underneath. After he turned it off, it didn't run out but rather dripped on the ground.
The second time it was started and then shut off, it dripped but not as much and eventually stopped. It's coming from what I'm assuming is the crank shaft breather hose?

The bike is not a Dyna, it's a FXR. The engine is probably sumped up from sitting. Put a drain pan under the bike and start it up and let it run for a while and identify the source of the leak. Keep a eye on the oil level in the oil tank and don't let it get too low. A FXR does not have a drain plug, it has a drain hose behind the left chrome side cover on your bike, so don't worry about a stripped out drain plug.

The same thing happened when we started it after it being stored for several years. Could it be sumping and it that an easy fix? The oil is coming from a hose under the bike.
It did stop after it sat for a bit when shut off.
The other concern is a bigger one....the engine got hot very quickly after starting it. Is that normal?

...and don't add any oil to the bike until it's warmed up. The sump is full of oil and the return side of the oil pump has to pump the oil in the crankcase back into the oil tank.

Thank you for the information. This whole Dyna not Dyna thing confuses me lol
Some places I look, it says dyna, others say it's not. Thank you for clarifying!
