Default 1980 flt 1st gear problem

Cold I can get it into first but after I drive for a bit and need to come to a stop and downshift, it is virtually impossible to get into first. I wind up having to go from a stop in 2nd gear. Can I go into the trans and make an adjustment or does this require a rebuild?

New clutch, dry sump, adjusted clutch several times. Don't think it's a clutch problem

Either the goofy linkage double arm is sloppy, common issue, I'd eyeball that first or the clutch is dragging. The pressure plate isn't disengaging evenly all round or the spring pressures set too tight, those would be my first checks before making any assumptions. Pop the derby cover watch the pressure plate as you work the lever full throw, isn't dead even tweak the adjuster nut 1/2 turn out at a time till it does and there should only be 3-4 threads showing on the adjuster nuts, anymore or less you may have to swap the springs around to even out the seated pressure.

This doesn't help I'd pull it apart put a ramjet retainer in, check the new plates to insure they slide easy over the studs, no drag. Studs have noticeable grooves, replace the hub, that'll make it drag hard. I toss the stock steel pressure plate, they are never flat and warp when hot, the Aluminum ones are cheap. Adjust as mentioned above, you should have a solid trouble free clutch as could want in a shovel. Even built motors. Board under the kickstand, somewhat leveled, ATF or cheap non syn primary oil till it just touches the bottom of the clutch shell.

I do this with any comes though I have to get into. Bad fork happens but they usually give lots of warning they are going out.
