I'm just sharing this if anyone is interested. This is the lab results of the Engine and Primary after my 1k service. I am still waiting on the Trans and Coolant samples. I intend to sample at each oil change interval while I own the bike. The bike is a 2024 117 M8.

One sample won't tell you much, oil analysis is more about trends over time, stick with it and see what happens. then you will know when something goes out of line. I use 400-500 samples a year in the construction fleet I manage, every compartment every service, it's saved us a lot of money over the years

 

Thanks for posting. To complete your post, you should tell us what brand oil and viscosity was submitted for analysis.

 

I can't answer your question on this sample, it was the original OEM fill. It's not a CVO so I really don't know what HD used. The next sample interval will be Mobile 1 20w-50 Synthetic. This is what I used for the last five years on a T/C (no sample data), that is what I am going to use unless I have a reason to switch. I expect the Copper and Iron to drop on the next samples because the break in was flushed out. I also expect the additives to change because I switched brands. I am a little surprised at the 67 ppm Copper in the engine sample. This seems high to me although we will see where it ends up trending.

 

I come from a similar industry. I intend to document, sample and develop trending. I'm sure any issues developing in the cam drive, early blow by, primary or trans will all show up early on a sample. I don't intend on molesting the engine. It will be all stock so the data, good or bad will be a good benchmark for an M8.

 

I have been a professional aircraft mechanic since 1974, I have taken a lot of oil samples for oil analysis, but I have never considered having oil analysis done on any engine I have owned, and I have never known anyone whose engine was saved by an oil sample.

Throwing away about 800 bucks over 100k miles.

Just change the oil every 5K and you will be fine.

 

Let's say you had an analysis that showed that something was wrong and you took the results to the dealer.

Do you have any expectation that Harley will remedy it under warranty?
