I have an 84' FXDS with both elec. and kick start. I always used the elec. start but today tried to kickstart it. When attempting to kickstart the kicker jammed, wouldnt engage or return properly. I finally got it to return but now the electric start just clicks and you can hear something is struggling to turn over.

Not sure what to do from here.

 

Remove the kicker cover and look for a broken gear or gears.

Does It make sense that the electric start wouldnt work if the kicker is jammed?

 

Broken parts could jam up the transmission shafts and keep it from being able to turn. Let us know what you find when you get it disassembled.

 

Another thing to consider is to remove the spark plugs, lift the rear of the bike, put the transmission in 4th gear, and see if you can rotate the rear tire. If you can't, something is binding up in the transmission, and it is more than likely broken pieces of the kickstart mechanism.

 

Iv been riding it pretty regularly and only started happening once I tried to kick start it. After attemping to start it, pretty sure it fired the starter as it was smoking.

 

That's going to happen if there's something keeping the starter from rotating. Don't use the electric start any more until you resolve the problem or you'll be replacing a burned up starter.
