Default New '23.5 &'24 Speed Limits

In our work on the current new models (Center Cooled 117, 121 &121VVT) we have found that HD has been adjusting the speed limits on the bikes. It appears like they have been adjusting again in the latest calibrations. As we all know the NHTSA recall was issued for the Street Glides and HD added ballast to them and a new calibration that lowered the Speed Limit on them. Some have stated the Road Glide also got the lower speed limits and others say No they did not. From reviewing all of the various calibrations that have been issued since the bikes first release they have gone from the base part number up to revision "H" (121 VVT)so far. With all the various limits in the different revision in the calibrations it really tough to say what you might have in any one bike. The latest calibrations raise the Speed Limiter back up some, so you may want to check and make sure your bikes calibration is up to date, if you have the low Speed Limiter.

Originally the Fuel Speed Limit was set to cut fuel at 114.9 MPH and return the fuel back on at 111.8 MPH with a Speed Limiter set to108.1 MPH and return back on at 104.3 MPH. Along the way they continued to lower them downward to a lowest Speed Limiter of 96.9 MPH and a return on of 93.2 MPH. The latest calibrations have now raised it back upward to a Speed Limiter of 102.5 MPH and a return on of 98.8 MPH. So if you have one of the lower speed limits going to the latest calibrations will bring you back up some and if you have the original higher Speed Limiter and you like to travel at high speeds stay away from the updates.

As always, thank you for your work, Steve!

Why does my 24 SG with latest updates have a limit of 107 mph ? That number doesn’t show up in what you wrote above. The bike gets to 107 and stays there, no real “cutoff”.

FWIW my bike was in for its 1k service on 6/11 and no updates were needed.

thanks Steve..my very early test on stock RG was it easily reached 105 and then I shut er' down so as to not go to jail ... I have since had all the ECM and BCM TSB updates applied as well as the SEPST Stage 1 ECM calibration..I've approached 100 easily but wasn't thinking about any sort of speed limit tests so not sure what the end result is now after all these updates... honestly it wouldn't break my heart if they set it to 99.9 mph since in our State triple digits gets you an automatic one year license suspension, which at my age and enjoying retirement as much as I am, would be a death sentence !

There are accuracy issues with all the bikes. If you look at what a given wheel and tire combination has for a roll out dimension you will find your answer. As the tires wear or you add and subtract weight with air pressure changes it all adds up.

My 24 street glide topped out at 107 as well. However as Brandon mentioned in another thread the speedometer is off by a few mph. I’ve noticed this as well with my GPS and roadside speed meters. It does run a little fast. Does anyone know what they did to the 24 street glides to fix the recall issue? They added a ballast to the 23 CVOs. Is this what they did to the 24s as well. Where is this ballast? Just wondering.

Ah, yep. That slipped my mind. I found out last week that 80 mph on my bike is really only 77. And 60 is only 58. So I imagine by that math, my limit is 102.5 as you mentioned.

Over the life of the tire the speedometer will change by about 4 mph. In my pea brain I would want it to read correctly at half of the tire life, this would give the least overall changes but that is not how HD does it. The funny thing is they do it differently based on where the bike is being sold, why I do not know, but I have checked the calibrations for various countries and they are calibrated differently.

I do not know for sure but the ballast they added gets place on the front end under the fairing for the '23 model year. One would need to remove the outer fairing to see if it there on the '24 models to know for sure. The 23 and 24 RG and SG CVO's both use the same calibration on US based bikes. there was no other models in 23 but they have added the RG and SG in 24 with a 117 non VVT engine and they also use the same calibration between those two models.

Could you clarify?
24 SG and RG have calibration A
23-24 SG CVO and RG CVO have calibration B

Or ALL have one calibration?

23.5 - 24 CVO 121 VVT Center Cooled (RG, SG) Cal 1 currently at Rev H
24 CVO ST 121 Center Cooled Cal 2 currently at Rev C
24 117 Center Cooled (RG, SG) Cal 3 currently at Rev F

One needs to remember the '24 models started shipping in the later part of January, and its now only later part of June. The Revision levels were current as of two weeks ago but change at anytime! Then these calibrations change based on the country they are being sold in, but the grouping remains the same in each country. Hope this makes it a little more clear for you.

One of the other stupid things they have done is to disconnect the charging port connection anytime the bike is powered up. So when you twist the key on, to just listen to the tunes your battery is discharging the entire time. There is a running change on the '24 models that is suppose to change this but we have tested bikes at the local dealership and found what they have in stock only 20% of them had the running change in them and its not something that a software update changes, we tried that too!
