My 92 Springer Softail is in need of new front brake pads. I've looked all over for a good video of the replacement procedure but really have not found one that I think really shows the entire process for a first timer. Does anybody have a link to one they have seen and thought it was good? Thanks for any help you can give.

 

 

I don't know springers at all, but I'm going to guess that is not a stock set up. However there are some service manuals posted on this website that might help you out:

No, not stock. Looks like a GMA caliper

Two top recessed bolts in the caliper, leave them alone, since they are used to clamp the clam shell together itself and don't want to separate them.


So proud bottom bolt and left hand bolts, used to hold caliper to bracket, and right hand proud bolt, use to hold pads in caliper (same with upper left proud bolt).
Note, very top larger allen bolt you can leave alone as well.

So loosen right proud bolt while caliper is still mounted, remove left and bottom proud bolts, twist caliper to open pistons sightly to pull caliper up and off bracket and rotor, stick in tool between the pads to wedge push pistons all the way back in once you have lowered fluid lever is reservoir so it does not over flow, then drive out roll pins to drop out pads.

Install in reverse order, making to sure to put a light coat of brake grease on the back of the pads and on the channels for the roll pins when you punch then back in to hold the pads in place, and use a drop of 242 loctite on the threads of the proud bolts, and torque them down to 32lbs when reinstalling.

Here is the rebuild kit for the caliper, and you can see by it, the roll pins that are using to hold the pads in in place,


If you need to remove front tire and bracket a well to say change rotor/clean wheel bearing and re-grease with new seal,, then use allen wrench in side caps channels to pull the decorative caps, then you will be able to remove the front axle to drop tire out.

As for once new pads and caliper back in place, fill reservoir at least half way to full line, squeeze and release break lever a few times until lever goes hard, release lever, and fill to full line.

 

Thanks for the instructions. I will pull is apart as noted. I know the caliper is not stock but hope the pads that are usually used on stock units are the same.
