Hey everyone!

I have a 2001 Sportster and I replaced the buckhorns with some small ape hangers, I got the TC Bros Narrow Ape Hanger 1" Handlebars from JPCycles: https://www.jpcycles.com/product/tc-...sku_id=1645508
After I replaced the bars, my original clutch cable was too short, so I got some XMT-MOTO 55-1/4" Clutch Cable from amazon and I've been using it for the last year. During that time, I felt that that cable might be too long, sometimes when the bike is in gear and the clutch is pressed all the way in, it feel like the bike still wants to move, so I have to hold it.
The question is, how do I measure the exact clutch cable length that I need for these bars?
I already tried adjusting the clutch cable both at the primary and also on the cable adjuster, it's maxed out, so I am assuming there is nothing else I can do to this cable and I will need another one?

Any advice appreciated!

 

cable routing is important as well as hold down points. as you use the cable, it will flex and effect the pull.

 

With cables and finding their length, the measurement is determined from the end of one ferule to the other, on the outer cable, that's the silver bit at both ends of the cable. The free length of the inner is a given and will be the same for whatever length of cable for whatever particular model of bike the cable is for.

As you want to shorten your clutch cable, disconnect it at the clutch lever. If you're happy with your cable routing, (no tight bends or angles in the route), the excess cable can be drawn through to the bars, and placed alongside clutch lever perch. Allow enough cable length so the steering can move from lock to lock, then mark the clutch outer cable where it would enter the perch.

Measure from that mark to the ferrule on the other end of the cable.

Order a 2001 Sportster clutch cable that length, or as near as you can get to it.

Fit it and then adjust the clutch and cable as laid down in the workshop manual.

Appreciate the advice. I will have to improve the cable routing (has a sharp turn around the rectifier) and measure/order another cable.

at 6 minutes in this video on the easy pull system they run a spacer down on the cover....im not using this system however....i found a tight tolerance spacer about 5/16 wide that will work....it will provide alot of extra slack in the event i need it.and bring this cable to 2.6 WHERE ITS SUPPOSED TO BE!...i think this is the answer...check it out

 

Haven't done it yet but I've already bought the apes, did some research, made my measurements and even went to the dealership. In my case, because I have ABS I need to get longer break lines besides that it seems I might need another set of electrical cables (the electrical cables are according to the dealership). So if you have ABS, you'll definitely need longer break lines and you will need a dealership to install them.
