Default 96ci in a 2000 fxdx??

Hey everyone, wondering if anyone has put a stock 96ci into an older dyna. I currently have a 2000 fxdx and I have bought a 96ci engine from a later model dyna. Just wondering what I'm going to need to do to make the newer engine fit. I am sticking with carb and not flipping to efi firstly because I like the carb better and secondly because I don't want to get a new tank. Just looking for some input f rom someone who has done it before.

Are you using your original 5 speed, or the 6 speed that goes with the motor? The only issue I can think of is they changed something in how they mount together, but I've never had a pre-'06 apart to know what the actual difference is. Might be able to overcome that though.

Even if it is even possible (6spd power train in 5spd frame) I don’t think it’d be worth the hassle. What’s your interest on doing the swap? Is the 99 shot or do you just want more power? The early twin cams have timken bearings from the factory so you’d be further ahead just building/rebuilding what you have.

I have a 6 speed trans in my 5 speed case. Biggest reason for switching is the mileage. 110+ km. New engine only has 2500km on it. So still using 5 speed case.

Yeah lots of people put 6 speed gears in a 5 speed case. The gears aren’t the problem. It’s the case. The 96” bikes came with a factory 6 speed. Different case, different mounting holes from a 5 speed bike. I’m almost positive you would have to cut and weld for the different mounting locations in your frame and that’s if you get a factory 6 speed case to use. It sounds like you want to try and reuse your 5 speed case on an engine designed to accept a 6 speed? I’m pretty sure that they just won’t bolt up either. Anything is possible with enough money and a welder. Like I said before though, I just can’t see how it’d be worth it.

You probably should’ve posted this thread BEFORE you bought the new motor.

Hey man, no need to be a dick about it. I’m not asking if it’s easy or plug and play. I know it’s not. Welding isn’t an issue. I asked if anyone has done it and what to anticipate. People put twin cams in fxr’s all the time, those aren’t supposed to fit either. But they are made to.

As said, the older 5 speed tranny case isn't compatible with the newer motor. You'd be ahead in the long run to complete the new assembly with an '06 / later tranny and fit the whole unit in as one piece in the older frame.
Since you're halfway there however, I gotta' point out that my '00 95" motor has 170,000 MILES on it and still doesn't burn a drop of oil (and has never had the cases split either,) so you might take that into consideration given that your original motor only has 70,000 actual miles on it.

But your bike, your call.

They fit because there’s several aftermarket conversion kits readily available for making them fit. I’ve never seen or heard of an early 5 speed bolted to 6 speed cases and installed in a pre-06 frame. You’d have to plug and tap new holes or make some kind of adapter plate that would almost certainly screw up your drivetrain geometry. You should start a build thread. I’d definitely follow that.
