Exclamation Warning about apes

I work out of town and my Road Glide has been in the Indy having a boatload of things added and changed to include apes. The bars of choice are KST Renegades. Not the most expensive but I have had their Mayhem bars on another bike and liked them so thought I would put them on this bike.

On my way home from my work week yesterday I stopped by the shop and my Indy showed me with his endoscope the inside of each side of the bars. You may not be able to tell well in the pictures but the raw edges with raw welds at the sharp turns need to be ground smooth before being wired.

I am posting this because of how many times I have heard and read where there was a problem after installing apes. I am just glad that I have an excellent Indy that is very thorough. I hope this will help some people going forward. And I know not everyone has an endoscope, I certainly don't but check in whatever way you can prior to install.

That's the problem when you buy those goofy looking bars. If you go with nice smooth bend apes you'd be fine.

I ran bars like these for several decades and NEVER had any problems whatsoever.

Picture is a bit fuzzy but weld looks ****. Lack of fusion in one part and too much meat in the other.

People complain that the bars from Factory 47 are too pricey compared to others but they smooth and polish the insides just as much as the outsides, so there’s no sharp edges at all. Wires pulled through mine with ease. Yes it’s extra work for them, and yes it’s extra cost, but ya gotta pay for attention to detail.

Yesterday I sent them an email and received an almost immediate response which shocked me. After a bit of back and forth they offered to wire them for me which was a nice gesture but I declined knowing my Indy will make this a non issue but again, glad he is so thorough. I finished just saying I was only letting them know in case it was an oversight. I was assured this would not be a problem but I will have peace of mind no matter what they or anyone else says. I thought they handled it as best they could.
