I agree. the BEST part of the BRP is from Asheville to Cherokee

 

I live close to the junction of BRP/SLD and agree best riding is down south but if you want to do it go for it. I would just suggest you have some alt. routes in case the weather is bad because you won't see a darn thing if weather is foggy and if raining it can be quite foggy. Also in case you just decide it is boring up there. As mentioned no gas on BRP. If you fill up at north end I would take 250 into Waynesboro off Afton Mtn. I consider 340 a good road in the valley from Front Royal all the way to Waynesboro. I ride it frequently. Limited on off on SLD--33, 211, 250 I think are about it. BRP in VA is 45 (legal). If you have (or anyone else) any specific questions or want more detail on roads etc from Lexington, VA north up to around Winchester, VA you can PM me and I will give you some of my thoughts. I have ridden all around that area and into WV (lived over there a few yrs) for around 20 yrs. You will be down by the Dragon, fwiw. I prefer Cherahola and would do it again but Dragon--once was enough because of the (too me) mob scene. The Miata rally didn't help and I have owned two. Hope you have fun.

There is never a good time to ride thru Boone. Traffic is always bad.

 

So many choices for a first-time visitor. I've been on the Skyline and BRP many times. I would NOT skip the Skyline for my first visit, but this might depend on whether you're a patient rider or more of a burner. Lots of tight curves and too many overlooks to stop at all of them. The speed limit is a bit tiring but it's not like you're doing it for 8 hours.


Another easier and faster ride is 220 from Romney to Covington. This is generally a valley road traveling through beautiful farms protected by mountains on both sides. All the small towns are pretty neat. Monterey is particularly neat and has a very traditional small town diner...High's Restaurant. Warm Springs, Hot Springs and many great little stops. The truth is there is almost no bad route (in terms of scenery) headed N-S or E-W from Winchester down to Roanoke. If you happen to love switchbacking up and down mountains, almost any E-W state route through the Shenandoah or Monongahela regions will produce that.

 

I've done it from top to bottom, bottom to top, middle up, middle down and never had a bad ride ... off the mountain excursions are always intriguing too
