Funny you wrote that because this is what I did. I drilled two holes in the end cap wrench 6 &12, put the wrench on the filter and drilled the holes through the wrench into the filter. Removed the wrench, Let the oil drain onto zip lock.
Put the wrench back on, screwed through it into the filter and that did the trick.
The filter on the M8 is more difficult to get to but all the drain plugs are all in a cluster, so that you can drain all three at once into one pan. Another benefit is you do not need to remove the left passenger footboard to remove the primary cover screws.
I had the oil changed at 1,000 miles then I did the 3 hole change at 4,900. The oil was dirty but the magnetic plug was clean. The tranny fluid was clean and no filings on the plug. The primary oil was dirty and the plug had shavings.
So now I'm back to putting Redline in the bike, my preference, I have the oil filter with the nut on the end K & N. Next time I'll buy the black instead of chrome because you can hardly see the filter on the M8.
Verdict - I love the M8 engine and everything about the 2017 FLHTK
