Default Looking for a kick-start.

Hey, my 1972 FLH is electric-start only, unless of course that fails like it did last night and it became push-start only... Anyway, I figure it might not be a bad idea to install a kick starter for such occasions as last night. I checked J&P Cycles, didn't find anything... though I certainly could've missed it. If anyone has any suggestions for where to find a good quality kick-starter, I would really appreciate it. Thank you, - Danny

I just saw a kit on ebay from Jireh cycle for 125 with free shipping. I would look for another that doesn't require you to replace your cover studs. V-twin carries them and I believe it is the same as what J&P sells. I went through the same thing back in 74 with my 72. I bought a used transmission to get the parts. Back then they didn't have kits and you could buy a whole transmission for less than a hundred dollars.
When you get the parts follow the manual for installation. Don't over tighten the starter clutch gear to the point that you force it too deep on the main shaft or you will have problems with the starter not disengaging.

Nobody makes a "quality" kit anymore...the are all made overseas with crappy parts...though they work fine for an occasional kick. Baker makes quality kicker gears...and jims makes a quality kicker shaft...just buy a cheap kit and replace any parts that fail with the good stuff.

What about Baker?
What about a solenoid button?

Thank you for the advice. Would this be worth trying?

It appears to be the same kit as the Jireh with the counter bored cover holes which requires you to replace the cover studs with allen screws. Do an e-bay serch for harley kick start kit. The problem with replacing the studs with screws is the increased chance of striping the holes in your transmission case and cracking the case trying to remove the studs. Also some of the beefier covers do not give clearance for the old style throwout bearing that was stock until 75.

Nice thing about a USA made piece is you only have to replace it once.

You have to call I think. Pretty sure HDF members get a discount as well.
