Default shock stud size???

Wanting to put 11" or 11.5" shocks on my 1981 fxs.

Confused on the different size shock studs and bolts for different years/models.

Ive read 5/8", ive read 1/2". Not sure.

Whichever size it is, I just have to make sure that the corresponding shovk eyes march the stud right?

For example if I want to fit late model sportster 11" progressive shocks onto my 81 fxs. Would that work?

the top weight of the FX has to enter the equation < its a lot heavier than a sporty / as a half weight top of the bike sitting on the shocks and you already will be grinding the inner primary away with the rear chain with that bikes swingarm angle, even with the correct FX 11 inch rear shocks - the studs wont be the problem - jz

Is there a way to get around this?

But, if you still want the look, you can make/buy a case saver to protect your inner primary.

I have 11 inch shocks on my 79 FX that are in good shape. I want to put 12 inch shocks on it. If your shocks are in good shape, maybe we can trade? I'm in eastern CT.

Joe im in new haven. Text me some more info and pics. I believe mine were replaced in 1995 with the oem hd 12" as they measure 11 3/4" on bike. No leaks, ride nice even 2up.

Default Shock Pictures

Mike, my phone doesn't have a camera, so I posted here. I just got the bike, so don't know the history. They aren't perfect but look and ride pretty good.

As you requested, here is a side view showing that cool low stance and the swing arm angle:

I know - I'm looking to swap my 11" shocks for 12" ones. My inner primary/starter is grooved too. OP wanted to see how it looked, but I think he's changed his mind.
