1979 shovel kickstart only, kick it and is almost starts but then farts out??

Well, I replaced the kickstart spring. BUT, Seems I have kicked it so much to the point that the kickstart gears are too worn to grab. I get the kicker in a sweet spot to kick through and it skips the teeth and I bash the inside of my knee on the battery or rear shock. hahaha. Got a nice baseball size bruise on the back inside of my knee. The kicker has been skipping like that for a while but now it is too bad to kick it because its impossible to get a good kick out of it. So both of my starting options on the bike are broken. Week one of working on the bike was still successful. Gotta price out kicker gears. Anyone know of a good deal out there? J&P cycles says $279.99 !!!!!

There's a brass bushing that wobbles out in one of the gears , not hard to change but sometimes they have to be opened up or reamed to fit the shaft afterwards . You can buy just the 2 gears involved you don't have to replace the whole kicker unit . Keep shopping man J&P is one of the most expensive place to get anything honestly , the baker stuff is good but damn pricey you can get a complete kit with a chrome cover for about $160 if you look , try Ebay also .
Either of the top 2 on this page are the usual problems when they start slipping through on you . The second link covers everything but the bushings in the outer cover
