the picture the top right gear is 4th than the shift dog / with the shift fork than 3rd gear - does it 3rd gear slide twards 4th or is it held in place by a ( snap ring ) when you put a screw driver between it and the next gear on the left - can you move it to the right ??????

This is a guess i dont have it front of me - and i have the tools to check and correct it

what you could do is this -
put the trans in netural set the forks in the centers of the two gears 1/2 and 3/4 - put the ratchet top in netural - ( the little tit is pushing the netural button ) this is a little tricky you have to be able to install the top and remove it with the two shift forks in netural with out having them move when you remove it the top again

you need to clean the locating pins so the top will just lift straight up - you could use 4 thick feeler gages and walk it if the forks move the location wont be correct for the test

what your trying to see is third / forth - gear dog and fork is in the center having the same distance between the dog and the gear on both sides of 3 and 4 i hope you get that i can try that again - if needed

forks and dogs in neutral, tranny top in neutral
top installed
went through gears and back to Neutral
took tranny top off making sure nothing moves
boths forks are moved a little to the right.

distance between the 3/4 shifter clutch and 4th gear is 1/16"
distance between the 3/4 shifter clutch and 3rd gear is 1/8"

So the clutch is slight "away" from 3rd gear
That being said, 1st and 2nd look about the same

I also tried installing the top in N and going to 3rd gear, removed the top and the clutch was fully engaged in 3rd gear. same thing in 4th gear

Ok the tool sets the distances in netural - what happenes is you set it for the cover than turn it up side down and it mirrors the install of the top - it really does not take much to get it to skip when its in gear as the dog ramps ramps and the 3rd gear ramps only work well if the distance is correct

having said that some other things come into play the cluster gear is the 1 / 2 gear set , how much play does it have back and forth AND how much in and out does 4 th gear have, guess on forth the cluster you can feeler gage behind 1st gear not the other end next to 4th

ok...
the 1/2 cluster moves along its shaft 0.023"
4th gear moves in and out 0.0225" (measured between the sprocket and tranny case)

yes what hapens is the fork is movable to the left and to the right move it around .025 thousands would be a guess on my part its so worn out it may need that much

the cluster end play is around .010 and 4 th gear is also around .010 so its way loose

Please Note - as loose as it is in the end plays, and the fact its been skiping my experence says to strip it to the screws, and re do all of it, as it will never be right with out doing that - no magic cure no easy fix sorry -- having said that its not that hard BUT in a shop like mine and the age it is and hands that might have been in it, you may not be able to correct it by yourself -- jz

I might have found the reason...

I think the 3rd gear is worn where it engages the clutch...
