In the trans. on any shovel I run straight 50 wt motor oil just like the engine uses . Don't use multi's like 20-50 in a shovelhead the hydraulic lifters are not like the late model bikes and do not like it . Bike will make a lot of noise when hot and you'll feel the power loss because the oil thins and the lifters loose lift and get sloppy .

Finally, after all these years a good reason not to run Multi wt oils in a Shovel. I always had people telling me not to run it but never had any problems with it. But I was running solids so that must explain it. Thanks Twisted

If you pull the jets pick up a torch tip cleaner to get into the small holes of the jets. some of that stuff wont come out with carb spray and a q-tip to clean out the float needle seat.

There's no doubt the bike is in sad shape. I wanted to haul it to the new house but I've had trouble trying to get that coordinated, sucks when ya gotta depend on others. Fortunately the weather has been amazingly mild for this area at this time of year so I got the idea to try and start it and ride it over, just four or five miles across town. The bike will get a thorough work over and spend some time in the shop before it gets any serious riding.

I was back over messing with the bike again for a while this afternoon. The idea of putting the original carb on is a bust, I'd forgotten about the dual throttle cable thing on the S&S. Took off the backplate, pulled the seat and gas tank off but didn't have the extension I needed to get the carb off the manifold. I rounded up more tools back home and I'll have another go at it soon.

I've got a good notion to take the carb to a shop and have them clean it up. This project is really sucking up valuable time. My recent move has kept me going non-stop with so many things to do and I've still got lot's of work to do at the old house cleaning and painting so I can get it listed and hopefully sold.

Put this project on the back burner and get that house sold. We will be here when your done. The worst thing you could do is rush through a project like this. You need to take your time to learn and enjoy the prosses.

Yeah I wanted to haul it over to the new place from the git-go where I can work on it as time allows but now with the time and money invested I feel I need to see it through and just get it run-able so I can move it from the old place. Later it will get the deep attention that it needs and the engine/tranny will go to a shop.

I won't ride it if I don't feel it's safe and I'll have an escort. If all fails I'll figure out a way to get it hauled.
