For what you boys spend buying those Gucci glides and dump into them on all the dick wagging bragging rights goodies , I can buy , completely rebuild and have 3 very nice running shovels . Been there and have been doing it for the last 35 yrs , if you still believe all old BS urban legends about them being broke every 2 miles you've never owned one or you where a complete idiot that couldn't tie his shoe and should have never had anything other than a Honda .

I feel better now , thanks .

DUDE!!! Ease up, man. Rode the old pans shovels and evo's. I'm glad you are a purest. I love my GucciGlide. Most people move into the newer stuff after many years, as I did. Those of us that rode the "Old" stuff can give advice to the new folks coming into the sport of Harley Davidsons. The way I see it, I had the pleasure of owning NEW pans, shovel's and evo's, and now twin cams. Everyone starting their life on old stuff is just used, and in most cases, used up. We can help them through it, and when I see an old kicker, I just smile. You give a lot of great advise, btw. Al

My sig pic is the same bike I've had for the last 30 years and about 1/2 million miles so calling me a die hard is a f*cking compliment and that bike has spent less time broke than some 2 year old ones in here so sing another song about how wiz bang twinkies are please . If she's been down it's been because I was too lazy to deal with at the time or had another to play with .

I like to build my own , I like the older iron it has personality unlike most playing the dig me and my big money new toy and the older you are doing that the sorrier you look . Not everyone hears the bandwagon music .

Ride what want but don't dis another mans choice , if you'd come any background you'd know that already .

As far as I'm aware you are totally unaware of my back ground in bikes. I started riding old British bikes at 18, bet you didn't know that, I have never paid any one to work on my bikes always done it myself, with help from mates in the early days, now at 54 I think that's some sort of background. I have known people buy an older Harley thinking they've a real bargain only later to find out it's not the case.

The guy who asked the original question was looking for advise
Perhaps my original post was a tad tongue in cheek, but don't get hung up on it.
As long as the prospective buyer is aware of what he's getting into.

cause if it ain't got points, kicker and chain it ain't a real Harley

You came in swinging partner not the other way around , wanna drop the bullshit and try again like we bumped at a pub over a pint for the first time ?

My choices are just that my choices and if you'v been around in here for a while you get a feel for some of the people in and some of us are not popular with others over things you know nothing about at 32 post's . If I toss out a nasty crack it's targeted at a single or maybe a few in a post just the same as I'll do on the street and believe me some in here need it as you'll find .

Think we get to know each other we may find we have common history and can have a good time , what do say one krusty old fuc to another ?

Look at my die hard attitude with my old iron like this ,

Just like young gung ho soldiers brought up and trained with all the new tech systems and toys tend to look down on older lifers as dinosaurs and out of touch . What the new guys are missing is how those guys got to be where they are . You don't get to old in the rankes being broken down and worthless all the times .

I see shovels the same way , they are tried and true old war wagons and survivors that can take one hell of a beating and still get a man home and be repaired in the garage . Twinkies will never make that statement and I don't see that engine design going another 10 yrs , harley will replace it to many inherent issues they have been throwing stop fixes at . I mean look they have made basic changes at least 3 times already maybe more I don't follow it the factory has gotten real close lipped with the service bulletins outside of the dealership . Shovels had about a 20 year run twinkies won't .

So yes I'll stand up and defend them somebody who has half a clue has to .

I forgot mine has neither points nor chain anything hasn't since before the twink's became the new gaga toy , age doesn't necessarily mean low tech

She puts out about 3HP less than a twinkie 103" does and it's lighter , I have my fun .

I went to a big *** harley shop here the other day. I seen very few bikes I liked. I did see a 2007 fatboy that was flat black stripped of all the useless BS and very little chrome I found that to be Nice but at 11k I look at the 78 shovel and see what I could do to it with 6k more. Also I am a damn good welder so I can fab up some nice stuff for her as well to make her really one of a kind a represent me even more. BUT I do thank everyone here for input I dont take any input here as bad. As I stated im new to bikes... I been reading a lot about HD and even picked up the 2012 parts catalog so I can order my seat tanks and bars... I will fab up my own fenders.

You have the skills to have a fine unique shovel man , if you can weld you also turn a wrench with no problem it's all in the mindset and hands .

I'll do a complete service check all the major torques and big bolts toss the bags & gear on and won't blink an eye at taking my shovel out for 6 weeks and 5000 plus miles at a time , crossed this country every way you can on her at least a half dozen times all ready and never been broke that couldn't be fixed in a parking lot somewhere .

Something else to consider shovel prices are on the climb steady , the average in the bay area Craigs list is $7000 on the low side and $10,000 is a common sight . Don't know if they are selling but I 'm seeing more like that and 2000 to 05 & 06 Twinkies down to $6000 .

Go for the shovel! If you got tools and a welder and some common sense youl do fine. There are a few old scabs here willing to lend some advice. Old age and wisdom will always overcome youth and skill!
