1979 FXEF 80 ci need fuel tank, want belt drive
#12
I converted a ‘79 FXEF from chain to dual belt drives. As stated above the rear is a big job with cutting, machining and welding….that’s just the swing arm…LOL. My rear kit was a SuperMax, the front a Phase 3 enclosed primary belt. Getting the tranny sorted was important with that tall rear pulley. 1st & 3rd gears from an FLH tranny went into my super glide box to regain some low end. Too much involved in the rear conversion. The bike had legs tho - 1st - 3rd gear only in town. Slipped into fourth ONLY at highway speeds.

Down side was the motor was healthy enough you didn't notice the low end lug, first would run out a long way, ended up spinning the output shaft in the flywheel doing an epic 2 gear smoking burn out leaving a parking lot full of twinkie trailer queens doing little chirpy burps impressing each other. Funny part is the bike ran fine the rest of the weekend and the 160 mi. home. Went to go to work Mon. and the starter & primary belt spun but the engine didn't.

Exactly for this reason I would not swap a chain bike to a final belt drive. I have 3 dual belt shovels. None have the plastic piece that prevents stones from being caught on the belt at the bottom where it spools on the rear sprocket. I see this as the weakest point of my bikes, the most likely reason for being stranded...

hello Long time reader first time poster....
I have just purchased a 1979 FXEF 80 ci. It has a regular super glide tank and I am looking for an original. Drag, Dennis Kirk, show but not sure if would really be same as original. Also I am considering converting it to a belt drive instead of chain. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
