What year is my Shovel motor?

RE: What year is my Shovel motor?
I believe Springer is right on this one. You don't have a genuine Harley Davidson. If you have a cone style S&S motor, it's a late model shovel 70-85. I believe you said your bike is registered off of the engine VIN number. Is the frame an aftermarket frame also?
If you have the MSO for the S&S engine, call them and they will let you know what year it is was built, if it is an S&S all the way through. BTW, I know that original heads and cylinders are stamped for the year they were produced, but never with 9 numbers like the engine VIN.
Take it to your local idependent shop and they can help you out. Hope your paperwork is straight. If frame and engine numbers are different, you will have to produce bill of sale for both. After 1970, most bikes are registered off of the frame number. If you buy a shovel 66-69, there is no frame number. They do have production number stamped on the frame, but it's not use to match with VIN numbers. Those bikes were registered off of the motor. Anyway, best bet is to let your indy look at it, so you can know what you really have in order to fix or upgrade.
Sorry to get off on a tangent. Good luck.

Yes, you can identify what year the motor is by the numbers on the cylinders. 1971-1980 has a nine digit number, the last digit represents the year. 1971-H1, 1972-H2, 1973-H3 and so on, 1980-J0
Example: I have a 1976 FXE-1200 (9D 1XXXX H6). 9D makes it an FXE-1200, H6 makes it a 1976
1981-1984 will have a number such as AAKE 010000 or BFKB 010000. The 4th digit represents the year. B-1981, C-1982, D-1983, E-1984. If the first digit is an A it came out of an FLH. If it's a B it came out of an FX.
Example: AAK-E- 010000 would be a 1984 FLH model
BFK-B- 010000 would be a 1981 FX model
Hope that helps and I hope I didn't just confuse the hell out of you! : )

RE: What year is my Shovel motor?
Thanks for all the input. I will check to see what year the cylinders are, based on the earlier comments. The motor has been torn down and allegedly rebuilt before I bought it, thus the S&S cases - - and powerdcoated: cases (red)/cylinder (black)/heads (red)/rocker boxes (black). It looks pretty cool.
I have the MSO for the S&S cases (2004), but that doesn't help regarding the remainder. I also have MSO for the frame (Ultima) and the tranny (Ultima cases - 5 speed softail style).
I guess the short answer, as noted earlier, is that "its a Shovel."

<< notice there are VIN numbers on the bottom of the cylinders, >>
You referring to the casting numbers ?
The best I can tell you about finding out any info on the rest of the "motor" is to pick up a parts manual that'll cover FL, FLH, 1970 to 1984 and FX models 1971 to 1984. Check the parts number on your scooters motor with the numbers in the manuals.
